Duane Merritt Greene (1842-1918) volunteered for Army service at San Francisco, California in February, 1863 and served for
two years as a captain and assistant commisary of musters in Company E of the 6th Regiment California Volunteer Infantry stationed
at Fort Gaston in present day Humboldt County, California. In 1872, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and was appointed
as a second-lieutenant to the Third Regiment Infantry and then transferred to the Sixth Cavalry, Company L. In July, 1877,
while serving at Camp Bowie [i.e. Fort Bowie], Arizona, Greene was attacked on a croquet court by the post surgeon who accused
him of seducing his wife. Within hours, Greene took a leave of absence rather than face a general court-martial for conduct
unbecoming an officer and a gentleman and resigned his commission on December 31, 1877. He later became a grocer in Pasadena,
California.
The 6th Regiment California Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Company
E of the regiment, stationed at Benicia Barracks, was ordered to Fort Humboldt, California, where it arrived by steamer on
February 17, 1864. From that time until October 10, 1864, Company E was constantly in the field operating against hostile
Indians, the "Weitchpec" [i.e. Yurok] tribe in the District of Humboldt.
